Bancheros Italian Dinners
Home of Bancheros Restaurant

Bancheros in 1952 with John Banchero and Jack O' Conner

The time was late 1948, an energetic, enthusiastic John Banchero Sr. began his dream of opening a family styled restaurant in Hayward, California. John Sr., with the help of his mother Maria and young bride Beatrice, opened Banchero’s Italian Dinners to offer a good home styled, fairly priced, family dinner establishment. The original 4 dinners were Spaghetti and Ravioli, Half Fried chicken, Grade A steak and Beef Tongue. There have been considerable changes and improvements over the years. Beef tongue popular then, has long since lost its place on the menu. Dinners included our minestra, or soup, tossed green salad, a relish dish, pasta, and dessert. Dinners were initially priced at $1.25 with an additional $0.35 for steak. Astonishingly inexpensive, as a new Ford sedan was $1100, a three bedroom house was around $5,000 and the median wage was $1.10 per hour.

John Banchero, Bea Banchero, John Jr. and MarkSoon John Sr. took on a partner, Jack O'Connor. Together, they worked to establish their business throughout the fifties. In 1951, needing room to grow and more parking, Banchero's was moved from its original location on what was Castro St. to our present location at 20102 Mission Blvd. A Quonset hut was the main structure as many of our older customers remember. 1955 brought a new remodeled sunken bar in the cocktail lounge. It's still a popular spot for those who are waiting for dinner or take out. We have a full bar with some tantalizing drink and appetizer specialties.

In the 1960's, as business began to flourish, a newly designed dinning room complete with a state of the art air-conditioning system was added to the restaurant. 1972 brought expanded parking and an additional dinning room and expanded kitchen. A new façade created the appearance to which people have become accustomed. Take out in the 70's became ever popular, especially after Oakland A's and Raider games. The late 60's and early 70's brought other changes, and the Banchero and O'Connor kids took their turns in helping out in the family business.

In the late 1980's, the dinning rooms were made homier with more plush booths and new carpeted flooring. The bar was elongated and provided more room to expand our beer and wine menu.

The 90's brought great transition as John Sr. passed away suddenly in 1993. Today John Banchero Jr. continues to operate the family business in the same tradition of John Sr. Seven course family styled dinners continue, starting at $12.00 (Half Chicken dinner) per person. Pasta dinners start at $9.00, and include our old world soup,

freshly made tossed green salad with our homemade dressing, relish plate (assorted salamis, olives, dilled pickles and cauliflower; peppers and anchovies on weeknights) and dessert. Full family dinners include all of the above courses along with ravioli and the choice of entrée that determines the price of the dinner one chooses. Banchero's represents a great value in a dinning experience. In comparison to the 1950's, Ford Sedans now cost about $26,000, the same three bedroom house with one bath sells for about $550,000, and the median wage is $15.00 an hour.

As times have changed and become diverse, so has our menu. We now offer a variety of pasta dishes, choice meat entrees, and fresh fish a plenty! Our cocktail lounge, with full bar, still offers inexpensive well drinks with highballs priced at just $3.00. Not only reasonable drinks, but appetizers are also now offered in our lounge as well as in the dinning room.

Early Bird Special Dinners are now offered Tuesday thru Friday 4-6 pm for those folks who want to enjoy a smaller version of our full family dinners. Also offered with the Early Bird Dinners are our Early Bird House Wine Specials.

It's a great place for families to celebrate any special occasion. We would like to thank all the families who have visited our establishment throughout the years.
